About In Residence in the Arctic

The In Residence in the Arctic platform is a tool for communities to invite people to become part of their communities for a shorter or longer period of time.

The purpose of the platform is not to attract tourists, but to attract for example skilled workers, remote workers or families that give “something” to the community, while they are in residence in the community.

Via the platform communities can attract for example:
·         A music teacher for the local music school
·         An engineer for the local trawl-doors company
·         A trainer for the local handball club
·         A chef for the local restaurant
·         An artist to the local community
·         Families in residence
·         A chef for pop-up restaurant
·         Businesses in residence
·         Remote worker in residence

In some cases, people will come “just” as skilled workers for companies, in other cases it will be people who both come as skilled workers or as remote workers, as well as they want to be part of enrichening the community.

The platform

The platform includes three features:
·         Hosts
·         Open calls
·         Stories

Hosts encompasses the communities that are part of the platform. Each host community should establish “a host group” (at least 3 persons) from different sections of the community to decide upon applications and arrange a welcome and introduction week (see also below).

Open calls are the calls communities have open at a present time.

Stories are stories from the experiences visitors and communities have had in the past.

Who can become a host?

All communities around the North Atlantic part of the Arctic – in the beginning communities from Greenland in the west to Norway in the East and Scotland to the south – can become hosts on the In Residence in the Arctic platform.

Hosts can

Hosts on the platform are given the opportunity to invite people – make calls for people – to become part of their community for shorter or longer periods of time.

Communities can make calls on behalf of local companies, for local public institutions, for local clubs, organizations, and associations – all with the common goal to attract new people, be it a skilled worker, a chef, an artist, a music teacher, a football coach etc. Communities can also make calls for remote workers and families in residence in their community.

Hosts must

All host communities must welcome people to their community, which at least includes:
·         A personal welcome and introduction week (arranged by the “host group”)
·         A tour of the community
·         Introduce them to the right people – people of importance to their visit in the community
·         Show them workspaces that can be important

In short, invite visiting people to become an “insider” in the community, and show them local hospitality.

This is an important part of the foundation for the platform – and is based on the experience that visitors that have a good time and feel welcome in remote communities are the best ambassadors to tell stories of the communities (and in that way attract other visitors).

Hosts will also see to, that stories are told from the visits. These stories might also be presented on the platform. It is also a positive feature if the stories are sent to the regional/national press as a press release with photos. Telling the good stories from peripheral / remote areas is an important part of the development work in these communities.

The hosts are also encouraged to spread the news about the platform, new hosts, and new open calls on their local homepages and on social media.

Clear communication about the financial part

It is of the uppermost importance that hosts have a clear communication with visiting people. Visitors must have a clear understanding of all terms regarding their visit – when it comes to timespan, tasks at work, accommodation, and the financial agreement and so on.

A call for example for a skilled worker must therefore include information about the timespan, tasks, the working hours, as well as the paid wage (and information about taxes). There must also be clear communication about any arrangement regarding:
·         Financial support to travel expenses
·         Financial support to expenses covering accommodation

Example 1:
If the local music school is seeking a piano teacher, the call must include information about:

·         The task is to do piano lessons for kids and youngster aged 7 – 18 years old
·         The teaching will be for 18 hours each week with individuals and groups.
·         The pay is approximately 900 Euro pr. week.
·         The community has an arrangement with renting accommodation in an apartment, which will cost 450 Euro pr. month (all included).

Example 2:
If the local shipyard is seeking a skilled worker for wooden ships, the call must include information about:
·         The Shipyard is seeking an experiences skilled worker for repairing wooden ships from 1. March 2022 until 30. September 2022.
·         The task is to repair wooden ships.
·         A normal week is 40 working hours.
·         The pay is 18 Euro pr. hour + 12% in holiday pay and 11% in retirement pay.
·         The Shipyard arranges accommodation in a house, which will cost 450 Euro pr. month (all included).

Example 3:
A call for remote workers must include information about:
·         Which office facilities (for example a coworking space) are available.
·         The costs (if any) connected to access to these office facilities (coworking space).
·         Arrangements (if any) regarding to accommodation and cost related to accommodation.
·         Possibilities to get financial support to travel cost (if any).

Example 4:
A call for families must include information about:
·         Arrangements (if any) regarding to accommodation and cost related to accommodation.
·         Possibilities to get financial support to travel cost (if any).
·         Which office facilities (for example a coworking space) are available.
·         The costs (if any) connected to access to these office facilities (coworking space).

After the call is closed

When the call is closed the hosts will decide, which applications will be accepted and inform person(s), families or businesses about the decision – and the host will also inform applications that are declined about the decision.

The host group will meet and make an agreement with the visitor(s) about the visit, date of arrival, welcome and so on.
